Note: some records have him in Company K and some have him unassigned. From his Civil War records: "I went from Huntsville Illinois with Alexander Alters [sic] of the 65th Ills. Inft. to Mt Sterling Illinois on the 14th day of Oct 1864. Was there examined and enrolled. We went from there to Camp Butler at Springfield Illinois, during this time Alters was in perfect health. We bunked to-gether + at the [?] of about a month he complained of feeling bad + one night took with a chill + was very sick. I can not recall any other symptoms. On the following morning I helped take him to the hospital. I left soon after for the South + my recollections are distinct, that I never expected he would come out of that hospital alive.
